Announcing the release of PyCon India Program Guide!

We have finally released our Program Guide for the conference providing all the teasers, details, and everything that will help you at the conference. You can read it here!

What is the PyCon India Program Guide (PPG)?

The program guide for PyCon India 2020 will be a fun, infographic journey to help you as an attendee to navigate through the conference experience. We have provided useful insights about communication tools that we will be using throughout the conference. The conference will be happening on Hopin with the async communication on Zulip.

We have tried to link information about new tracks, social events, and exciting things that will be taking place this year. We talk about workshops, devsprints, job fair, the new .extend() track and so much more in detail.

This year with the conference being online, we are also detailing our Code of Conduct with a renewed focus of reporting incidents as they happen. All the information will be available in the PyCon India Program Guide that you all will be receiving with the welcome invite.

Why I should read it?

If this is your first time attending PyCon India, then we know its hard to get acquainted with the conference model we follow when its virtual. It's really simple if attending offline and hence we thought of creating this document. This documentation is the way forward in providing folks with the right context from the start to help them move in the right direction. We hope this helps and it helps you have a great PyCon India this year.

Credits and Inspiration

The PyCon India program guide has been inspired by the Europython 2020 Program Guide and we thank the Europython team for their support!

The content and design team has been working a lot on the program guide and put great effort into making this a reality. Please do pass on your feedback on how we can make it better for the next year!

Presenting our Diversity and Inclusion Track 2020!

Diversity and Inclusion have been our utmost priority. To make the conference more accessible we had taken a series of constructive steps to build an inclusive space for all. Promoting the sharing of knowledge and diverse insights by the community without inhibitions and still managing to keep 6 feet apart.

As per our mission statement, we would like to ensure that the conference approaches everyone with respect and that we resolve differences peacefully. In particular, we will proactively extend our invite to women, provide support for students, and ensure that people with disabilities feel welcome at the conference.

This year as the conference goes online, we worked towards adding Diversity and Inclusion as its own track at the conference. We came up with a series of carefully picked up experience sharing sessions by women established in their fields - talking about their journeys and experiences to reach where they are currently. The categories for these sessions are as follows:

Day 1 - 2nd October

  • Category 1: Women leading successful communities within India | 13:30 - 14:00
  • Category 2: Women in Leadership Roles | 14:00 - 14:30
  • Category 3: Women rejoining workforce after long career break | 18:00 - 18:30
  • Category 4: Women student doing great | 18:30 - 19:00

Day 2 - 3rd October

  • Category 5: Women in Entrepreneurship | 13:30 - 14:00
  • Category 6: Women who transitioned career from non-tech to tech field | 14:00 - 14:30
  • Category 7: Women in Research | 15:20 - 15:50
  • Category 8: Open Source contribution and opportunities | 18:00 - 18:30
  • Category 9: Tech conferences and grants | 18:30 - 19:00

Alongside these, we have the traditional PyLadies India Lunch happening on Day 1 (14:30-15:15) - online of course! Experience sharing sessions and PyLadies India Lunch will be happening in the PyLadies Booth. Also, on top of this, we have two other sessions focusing on Diversity and Inclusion happening between 18:00 - 19:00 on both days. The topics for these two sessions include:

  • The importance of 'unconscious bias' awareness for Diversity and Inclusion
  • The importance of Diversity and Inclusion for Algorithmic Bias Considerations

More information about the schedule, talks, and speaker details can be found in the document or on the Hopin Calendar. We hope to see you all there!

Trying something different this year

Submissions this year

As you know, PyCon India 2020 is going online and completely virtual this year. Hence, the team wanted to take the unique opportunity to make the conference bigger, more inclusive, and much more accessible to our attendees the world over. And, we were successful. We were so glad to see the community's response to our efforts, with outstanding submissions to our call for proposals. We finally ended up with a total of 243 talks submitted under 12 primary domains with talks pouring in from all over the world.

With great proposals comes difficult decisions

The only downside to getting excellent talks each year at PyCon India is that we end up rejecting many talks. This is because, we are almost always under the burden of limited slots available for the conference. The review team is under great stress of having to consider various factors while selecting the talks, including a proper mix of beginner and advanced topics, providing an opportunity for first-time speakers, diversity, all the while maintaining talk quality, etc.

Our first order of business, adding another track!

Over the last few years, PyCon India 2020 has been a three-track event. Seeing the quality of the talks this year, we felt inclined to make this year's PyCon India's lineup our biggest ever with an additional track for the event this year!

Hence, PyCon India 2020 will now be a four-track event effectively increasing talks selected for the conference by 33%. This would mean more people getting the opportunity to present, and more talks for us to watch right at our home. Right? Right? We didn't stop there, presenting...!

.extend(), a unique track for talks rejected this year!

We believe that no talks are worthy of being rejected anywhere. And, with that ideology comes to the concept of a track that would cater to the awesome proposals that unfortunately get rejected. Well, not anymore. With .extend(), we are giving a second chance to each speaker who submitted their talk to PyCon India to still present their ideas and insights at the conference. We thank Cloud Native Rejekts for the inspiration behind this new track!

Our team's constant efforts to improving talk quality and not undermine anyone's efforts to submitting proposals at PyCon India motivated us to initiate the 5th track for the conference. All of the tracks are equal to our eyes and we expected the attendees to feel the same. Hence, PyCon India will now be a 5 track conference, with 4 usual tracks and the 5th one being our new, .extend() track!

Okay, but how is this track different from a usual track?

The track is very similar to the other 4 tracks. The only difference being the process of talk selection. Instead of the talk selection done by our esteemed review committee, we will be holding a raffle to select and schedule the talks. Any person who submitted their talk at PyCon India 2020 and attending the conference is allowed to take this opportunity head-on!

This initiative is not to have a separate conference but this becoming an integral part of PyCon India for the years to come. The track will be scheduled in parallel to all the other items in the conference schedule. The talks will be delivered through the same channels as the other tracks. The talks will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube after the conference, along with the other talks and workshops.

Taking a new, positive initiative!

At first, we headed out to by naming our new 5th track refusals.py. With valuable feedback from our attendees, we realized we can have a better, more apt name for our track with which people are comfortable, although we received considerable interest in the new track. Hence, this helped us rethink our approach, and considering the feedback, the team decided to name the 5th track .extend() signifying our idea and initiatives of including as many talks as we can. We hope that the community welcomes this initiative with a positive mindset as we continue to work towards a better PyCon India each day!

We would encourage each and every attendee whose talks weren't selected to fill the interest form that they have received in the that were emails sent out yesterday. As always, looking forward to seeing you at the conference!

What's different at this year's PyCon India 2020 DevSprints

PyCon India 2020 is THE place for developers from across the country and beyond to gather and celebrate Python. But what good is a tech conference without getting your hands dirty writing some code? Hence, for all open-source enthusiasts out there, the PyCon India team is happy to announce Devsprints @ PyCon India 2020.

To folks that might ask, what are Devsprints?

Devsprints are a 2 day event being organised at PyCon India 2020 to promote open-source contribution and getting people started with it.

At devsprints, mentors/contributors of popular OSS projects are there to guide you through the end-to-end process of making your very first open-source contribution. Right from setting up the build environments, to developing and testing code, to submitting patches for bugs and features. If you are stuck anywhere, mentors will be available right on the stream to help you figure out issues and resolve them as best as they can! From past experiences, we’ve seen a lot of people start off contributing to FOSS through PyCon India Devsprints and later go on to become regular contributors to various projects across the web.

How is it different this year!

2020 has been a roller coaster for all of us. And, we want to sure we make the most of it. Hence, this year the devsprints will be conducted online on 4th and 5th October 2020 at the Hopin conference platform. In addition to that, project maintainers will be available async on Zulip with each project having their own stream. With Devsprints on 4th October 2020, you can also check out our 2 track workshops that will be happening that day as well. Tickets are selling out fast for Workshops! Grab them now! For one ticket, you will be getting access to all 8 workshops, their content and also any resources that speakers are going to share!

Need Contributors for your project?

If you are a contributor or have been involved in the maintenance of any Python-based open-source projects, please come forward and add your project to the PyCon India 2020 Devsprints. Ideally, you should have a history with the project through previous code commits. Your responsibility will be to help new contributors set up their development environment, list out beginner-friendly bugs, and guide folks on any problems they face during the event.

How to add your Project?

  • Fill this Google form to provide your project and contact details.
  • Later, navigate to our GitHub wiki and edit the Projects table using the edit button to add your project details in correct markdown format.

Note: You need to be logged into your GitHub account to edit the page

If you have any questions regarding the devsprints, be sure to reach out to us on Zulip over on the #2020/devsprint stream!

An awesome PyCon India keeping you at its epicenter!

Help us, Help you Convince Your Boss

There is lots to be gained by attending PyCon India 2020. Unfortunately, it takes time to sit down and compose an email to send to your boss enumerating all of them. Now consider that at least half of our attendees attempt to do that, we would lose so many hours of productivity reinventing the wheel ;) Hence, in the spirit of Python and automation, the PyCon India Content team is here to save the day. Down below, we have composed a "Convince your boss" letter. Of course, feel free to edit the parts you need and remove some you don't.

The Letter

Dear {BOSS},

I am excited to brief you about PyCon India 2020, India's premier conference on using and developing the Python programming language that takes place online from October 2-5, 2020. About 1500+ Pythonistas from diverse fields and all over the world are bound to be in attendance for the 12th edition of this mega event.

It would be great if I can get an opportunity to attend this conference as there will be innumerable benefits for me as an individual which will in turn impact the organization as well. To list a few:

  • {OPTIONAL} I am particularly keen on attending this {TALK/WORKSHOP/DEVSPRINT} on {TOPIC} presented by {SPEAKER-NAME} as our {PROJECT/UPCOMING PROJECT} is based on this.

  • Exposure to the actionable best practices & tools that we could use in our projects, saving money and time spent exploring different options.

  • Provides a forum to get a sneak peek at upcoming innovations.

  • Provides a platform to unmask the rationality behind the trending technologies like ML/AI, automation, web development, software development, IoT, and more that uses Python.

  • Learning technologies from a wide array of talks, workshops, keynotes, and developer sprints each presented by inspiring and enthusiastic industry experts, community leaders, and many young minds delving into important concepts and new technologies.

  • Opportunity to network or even able to hire like-minded people from diverse backgrounds including programmers, enthusiasts, researchers, entrepreneurs scholars, and many more.

  • A chance to spread the word about our company and create goodwill about the opportunities and incentives the employees are given. This will be the ideal way to attract future employees from a diversified talent pool.

  • {OPTIONAL} As an {employee}, attending the conference will also demonstrate to the tech community that our company believes in providing more such opportunities very seriously.

PyCon India's committed to keeping the event inclusive and easily accessible by all. Hence, due to the online nature of the conference, we have kept the ticket prices to a bare minimum this year. The ticket includes access to 2 days of PyCon India 2020 keynotes & talks.

I would be happy to write a post-conference report detailing what I've learned and to recommend any changes that we could implement to improve our practices. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I hope we make use of this opportunity for the benefit of our company.

Thank you, {YOURNAME}

Wanna help make PyCon India even more amazing? Join the team!

Have you ever wished you could contribute or give back to the Python community? Well, here’s an awesome opportunity for you to do it with the year's premier conference for the Python programming language, PyCon India 2020.

PyCon India is a grass-roots, volunteer-driven conference. What that means is every year for the past 12 years Python communities across the nation have come together to help plan, organize, manage, and run the conference. The conference is operated entirely by volunteers from planning to finding the speakers to managing call for proposals to handling the mega event successfully without fail.

What you need to know.

Before you embark on a journey helping the community make the conference even more amazing, there are a few things you should know:

  • There is a lot of work that goes into a conference, and all of it is done by the volunteers. So, naturally, volunteering requires a lot of time and effort, and some activities like running outreach and social media, building content, and finding speakers, a lot more than others. So, make sure you can allocate sufficient time to your volunteering efforts.

  • If you are engaged in a volunteering activity while a session is going on, you might not be able to attend that session. If someone needs your assistance with a task, you need to be there. So, plan your conference schedule accordingly.

  • Volunteering does not provide you a free way into the event. At PyCon, everyone needs to buy a ticket, even the organizers. We volunteer because we love Python and the community, and want to make this event great, not to get a free pass to the conference.

Workgroup - Group of people responsible for the execution of specific tasks focused on a particular aspect of the conference mandated for a given team. The workgroup is also responsible for setting guidelines on the team's working.

Volunteers - The workgroup, along with its volunteers, execute various tasks as agreed within the workgroup. Each Workgroup consists of several volunteers who assign each other tasks, complete the assigned tasks, and help manage the group.

Finally, volunteers are the most important part of the event. Without volunteers, the event cannot happen. So, even if you are attending PyCon for the first time, we encourage you to volunteer with whatever you can. If you don't want to miss any of your favorite sessions, then volunteer for smaller tasks.

What’s required of you?

All the aspects of the conference are managed by the volunteers. There are a variety of areas where you can help.

  • If you have a passion for social media and love interacting with the masses, you can join our social media team and help us take the conference to a wider audience.

  • If you’ve always had a knack for amazing designs and visuals, and you like to express your ideas in designs, you can join our design team and help make our content beautiful and visually pleasing to our community members.

  • If you love the nuances of a language and words have always helped you express yourself, you can join our content team and help us make our content more expressive and remarkable for all our readers.

  • If you’re great at programming and looking to make some contributions that might help the community, you can join our technology team and help us out with numerous implementations for our platforms. Your frontend skills can help us improve our website and blog. You can also contribute to our CFP platform, Junction, with your Django skills.

We don’t have any specific requirements for our volunteers. Any contributions to any area of the conference which will make the event better are welcome. If you need any help with any kind of work or contribution, feel free to reach out to any of us at our Zulip channel.

All the workgroup leaders and volunteers have a weekly meeting to brief about the progress in their respective workgroup so that everyone's on the same page. Here is a list of our workgroups and their contact persons:

  • Code of Conduct - Sayan Chowdhury
  • Accessibility - Saptak Sengupta
  • CFP (Call For Proposal) - Kumar Anirudha
  • Design - Saptak Sengupta
  • Social Media - Pradhvan Bisht
  • Dev Sprint/Workshops - Ananyo Maiti
  • Mentorship/Editorial - Vipul Siddharth
  • Review Panel - Ritesh Agarwal
  • Content - Vipul Gupta
  • Platform - Chandan Kumar
  • Technology - Nabarun Pal

What’s in it for you?

You might be wondering, what will you get out of helping us make the event better? What will you gain for providing the conference hours of your time? Other than having an insight and say into the decisions and the direction of the conference you will be attending, there are also some other benefits to volunteering too.

You will get to meet many exceptional people, many of whom are recognized experts in their field. Along with the industry leaders and experts, you will also get to meet a plethora of new people who are working in Python and other open source communities. Some of them might even be developers and contributors to the software you use, and you’ll get to interact with them and get some insights into the development process.

You will also get first-hand, practical experience in managing an event, working with a team, and the open-source development ecosystem. You will get to learn how large-scale, real-life projects work, and what is it like being an important component of the massive machinery behind all the community events. You will get the chance to work alongside some amazing people, from whom you can get to learn a lot if you’re willing to learn.

How to get started?

Now that you’re aware of what it takes and what it means to volunteer, if you wish to help us make the conference even better with your contributions, you should start with:

  • Joining the mailing list, there you can stay up to date with all the happenings, discussions, and overall progress of the conference preparations.

  • Join our Zulip channel and follow the workgroups you would like to contribute to. There you can meet all other volunteers, and discuss and share your work with others.

  • You can also pro-actively "Watch" the following repos on GitHub where you can stay up to date with the progress of various tasks and even contribute where you feel you can help. Feel free to actively participate in any discussion, open an issue, or file a Pull Request for any contribution you feel will be helpful to the conference.

If you have any questions, please drop a mail to the mailing list, but make sure to check the mailing list archives, for previous discussions, before posting. You should also check out the PyCon India Handbook, containing the experiences and guidelines from previous organizers, which might be helpful to you in your volunteering journey.

Happy volunteering!

Tips on writing a kickass workshop proposal for PyCon India

The call for proposals for workshops has been officially opened! If you are slight to moderately unsure of submitting a workshop proposal, you won't be after reading this.

Here's a question for you.

Do you think that you would be able to assemble 2.5 hours of material and lead an online session full of PyCon attendees through learning a new skill, library, or technology? Then you might be someone we are looking for. Apply to host your workshop at PyCon India 2020! PyCon India 2020 workshops will be held online on October 4th, 2020.

As with the talks, we are looking for workshops that can grow this community at any level. We aim for workshops that will advance Python, advance this community, and shape the future. Each workshop runs for 2.5 hours plus a break for coffee. As workshops are longer, more in-depth than talks, they require much more preparation. Much more when it comes to writing your proposal.

CFP for Workshops closes on 31st August, 2020.

Guide to writing amazing proposals

As you think about your experiences, skills, and knowledge that you would want to bring to the table. We also want you to focus on the proposal that you will be submitting to us. A well thought out proposal means everything here at this point. Take your time to go through our team's advice on preparing a kickass proposal that turns heads (virtually):

When submitting a proposal for a workshop, you would need to fill the following details.

Title

Give your workshop a name that accurately describes the workshop's focus in regards to potential attendees.

Description

A brief description of the workshop is needed here. Do provide as much detail as you can to guide us through your plans for the workshop. The workshop duration is needed to be 2.5 hours. Hence, a rough timeline detailing how you will be spending time explaining the concept would be a great idea to start with.

Audience Level

At what level of Python and other topic-specific experience or expertise is the workshop aiming for? We realize this may be too narrow for a workshop, for example, if the workshop is aimed at experienced programmers but novices to Python, but give it your best shot. Reviewers need to know what level of Python experience is targeted and also what level(s) of domain-specific expertise is targeted, for example, networking, SQL, database, etc.

Prerequistes

Preferences or requirements if any in regards to your workshop that attendees need to take care of before joining in.

Video URL

With PyCon India 2020 being online this year, we are introducing preview videos to our proposal submission workflow. Preview videos are you talking about your proposal, topics you intend to cover in the workshop, and how you intend to cover them. Participants are strongly suggested to upload links of their preview videos while submitting their proposals. It will be immensely helpful for reviewers to go through preview videos and take that into account before making final decisions on your workshop proposal. Please keep in mind to strictly follow all guidelines for creating your video preview as mentioned here.

Speaker Info

You'll be asked to enter your biography and the information will be made public. Here, you may wish to include more information for reviewers to complement information about your previous experience. This can include your subject matter experience, past workshops if any, past speaking events if any, or anything else that would help us understand and gauge your abilities as a workshop presenter. A link to a video would be ideal (to be added in speaker URLs)

In the end, we would like to mention the workshop selection process attempts to choose a good variety of workshop topics and levels that will be in demand, i.e., it doesn't just select the best proposals! The selection process has also tended to prefer Python-related topics over more general software development tools or practices that aren't Python-specific.

Where to submit your proposal

  1. Read the call for proposals editorial for more information on writing proposals.
  2. Next, start with drafting your proposal in the New Proposal page after signing up for an account.
  3. Do make sure that the Proposal type is selected as Workshop from the Proposal type dropdown.

Do make sure to read the best practices before you start typing them proposals especially if this is your first workshop proposal!

Have any more questions? We are here to help!

Feel free to ping us on Zulip or IRC (#pyconindia) or contact the coordinators through email:

We look forward to seeing your proposals filling our inboxes in the coming months! Till then stay safe, stay vanilla!

It will be immensely helpful for reviewers to go through preview videos and take that into account before making final decisions on your talk proposal. Please keep in mind to strictly follow all guidelines for creating your video preview as mentioned below:-

  1. Duration & orientation
A 1-3 minute video to be recorded, preferably in portrait mode.

  2. Upload to YouTube
The video has to be uploaded on Youtube. If you don’t want other people to find it, mark it as unlisted. Don’t mark it as private or disallow embedding, or we won’t be able to see it.

  3. Only you talking about your talk
The video should contain nothing except you talking about your talk. Try to make a video that holds our attention and helps us understand more deeply about what's your talk is all about.

  4. No effects & No Music
Please do not add any background music to your video. No screenshots or postproduction wizardry please; we don’t want this to turn into a video making contest. If you’re going to spend time making something cool, put that into your slides & proposal instead.

  5. No Script
Please do not recite a script written beforehand. Just talk spontaneously as you would to a friend. People delivering memorized speeches (or worse still, reading text off the screen) usually come off as dull and uninspiring. Think of this as fun activity and let your heart do the talking. Be vanilla!

  6. Check Audio
Try to keep your voice clear and check that its being recorded properly. Make sure there isn't any background noise. Try to record this in an empty room if possible without much going on in the background.
